Enter a name for the placeholder in the text field that appears. The “Placeholder Name” dialog box then opens. From the menu that appears, choose the “Add New Placeholder…” command. Then click the “Insert Citation” drop-down button in the “Citations & Bibliography” button group. Then click the “References” tab in the Ribbon. To add a citation placeholder in Word, place your cursor at the point in your document where you want to insert the citation placeholder. You can then return to edit the placeholder and insert your citation information later.
